The Wetland Stewardship Volunteer Program in La Center will enter its third year of operation in 2010. The Department of Public Works and citizen volunteers have been working together to improve the functions and aesthetics of the wetland which lies between South View Heights and Vista View Ridge.
"Think Globally, Act Locally" are words which give direction as to how individuals or communities can help to improve the Earth's environment. With that vision in mind, citizen volunteers and city employees have already joined efforts to evaluate the efficiency of storm water retention of the large ponds and to remove poisonous and noxious weeds from the riparian areas along the wetland ponds and streams.
The wetlands and streams in La Center drain to the Lewis River and ultimately discharge into the Pacific Ocean by way of the Columbia River. What we do in the City of La Center influences the nutrient loading into the total system just as other activities along the Columbia River and its tributaries.
If you are interested in becoming a wetland steward in the City of La Center, then call Alice Peters at 263-7665 to register.
